Speakbox
Overview
Speakbox was a mental health platform I co-founded for two connected users: clinicians running a practice and clients doing the work between sessions. Speakbox Care handled the practice workflow; Speakbox Life gave clients web and mobile tools for check-ins, resources, sessions, and shared care plans.
The Problem
Private mental health work has a messy product boundary. A clinician needs scheduling, intake, notes, consent, billing, documents, and video. A client needs enough context after the appointment to remember goals, action items, and resources. If those systems live in email, PDFs, calendar links, and a generic EHR, the relationship depends on manual glue.
Health data also changes the engineering constraints. Privacy law, access controls, encrypted transport, data retention, billing boundaries, support access, and subprocessor disclosure are product requirements, not back-office details.
The betIf the care plan lived where both sides already worked, between-session care could become part of the workflow instead of another admin channel.
What I Built
- Speakbox Care: practice management for mental health clinicians, including intake, scheduling, session notes, clinical charting, care plans, action items, consent, documents, billing, telehealth, and client insights.
- Speakbox Life: a patient-facing app on web, iOS, and Android for daily check-ins, resources, provider connection, video sessions, and follow-through between appointments.
- A Nuxt 2 public site with static generation, Contentful-backed resources, SEO metadata, sitemap generation, HubSpot forms, Firebase Functions contact handling, pricing pulled from a billing API, and security/privacy pages for regulated customers.
- 4 microservices for shared actions, scheduling, billing, and webhooks between the platforms.
- Hasura GraphQL API for the shared data layer.

Where It Landed
Speakbox operated from 2019 to 2025 and generated nearly $30k in total revenue. We shut it down after our CEO and clinical subject-matter expert left the company; without that domain leadership, continuing clinical software would have been the wrong risk profile.
